            • Inner Auto - Good source for learning about autos. Walks you through some of your car's basics - how antilock brakes and automatic transmissions work, for example. Colorful descriptions, animations.
            • Buying a Safer Car: New Car Assessment Program - you can search this government database fo the safety performance ratings of cars, trucks, vans, and suv vehicles.
            • Edmunds Automobile Buyer Guides - New car/truck listings include manufacturer's retail price, dealer invoice prices, standard and optional equipment, specifications, reviews.
            • Kelly Blue Book Official Guide - New car pricing and used car Blue Book values.

            Books, Articles, Authors & Literature

            • Bookfinder - a place to find old, out-of-print or rare books. If you're looking for a particular book, this is the place to start. Puts you in email contact with a bookseller who has it.
            • BookTV - On weekends CSPAN, which normally broadcasts proceedings in Congress, turns to authors. Their interviews and appearances are also available free at this website.
            • Authors' Yellow Pages -is a searchable directory of author websites.
            • Project Gutenberg - If you want to download a free copy of a book, Project Gutenberg has been actively digitizing out-of-copyright books for a few years now and has over 4,000 titles available to date. [If you'd like to help with this, or make a donation, they're open to that, too.]
            • Great Books Online- Online editions of a great many great books.
            • FindArticles.com- An archive of published articles that you can search for free. Constantly updated, it contains articles dating back to 1998 from more than 300 magazines and journals.
            • Literary Prizes, Awards - maintained by the Canterbury Public Library in New Zealand.
            • Literary Resources on the Net - maintained by Jack Lynch, who began it as a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in English Literature at the University of Pennsylvania but has since moved on to Rutgers. All sorts of stuff, Goeffrey Chaucer to Hunter S. Thompson.
            • New York Times Book Review - An online archive of 50,000 book reviews, author interviews, and book news articles since 1980. Requires registration but no fee.

            Business

              • Colorado Business and Economic Information - various Colorado government agencies provide valuable resources for businesses, large and small, plus economic information about the state. This is a selected list from the Colorado State Government that brings together both Internet sites and print publications.
            • Consumer Reports - Same as the magazine. Some services are free, but for complete articles you must subscribe. (However, it's only $4.95 for a month, which could be worth it to you.)

            • CompaniesOnline Search - Database of information on over 900,000 publicly and privately held companies. A service of Dun and Bradsteet and Lycos.
            • Franchise Handbook: On-Line - includes a directory of franchises.
            • Small Business Advisor - information to assist the entrepreneur in starting and operating a successful business.
            • U.S. Small Business Administration - includes 31 most asked business questions, business plans, minority small business and more.

            • Gilpin County Government Job Listings - not many, not often, but worth checking.
            • Jobfiler.com -offers free job hunting tools, including online search, networking, job casting and utilizing recruiters. Job Filer's Job Search Organizer is intended to help you organize and manage your job hunt.
            • Career Resource Homepage - maintained by Rensselaer's Career Development Center, this is a comprehensive and well-organized index to the job and employment resources on the Internet.
            • Federal Jobs Central - includes a search tool for federal jobs.
            • Occupational Outlook Handbook - the Government's premier career reference book on occupations and tomorrow's job market.

            • Secret Wonder Web - the Denver Public Library's new kids' web site. Homework help, fun games, new books, and more for the children in your life. There is also plenty for grownups, especially teachers and parents. Check it out.

            • Princeton Review - Online courses to prepare for the SAT, LSAT, GRE and GMAT. These aren't free but they are probably worth the money if you are serious about these tests.

            • Green Choices - Living in an environmentally sound way is easy in concept. This site makes it easier to actually do.
            • Living on Earth - a weekly radio show focusing on the environment. A good way to keep up to date on environmental issues.
            • EcoPortal -Providing Full Text Searches of Reviewed Environmental Internet Content, News, Links & More - Over 3,000 Sites Made Fully Searchable.
            • EPA - the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Government Agency that protects our environment, or fails to, or does too much of, depending on who you listen to.
            • Why Biotech?- The genetic alteration of crops is a hot issue for a lot of people, with arguments for and against. This site is for.
            • BuiltGreen - Energy efficient homes built from materials that are not acquired by the destruction of old growth forests? An idea whose time has been here for awhile.
            • World Watch Institute -Worldwatch is a nonprofit public policy research organization active since the early 1980's. A good source for the mostly-not-so-good information on global problems and trends. The complex links between the world economy and its environmental support systems are a central concern of World Watch.
            • Global Greengrants Fund -"The Earth is not dying - it is being killed. And the people who are killing it have names and addresses." Operating on that premise, Global Responseasks its members to write letters to specific officials who have the power to make positive changes concerning the construction of dams, the logging of rainforests, and similar projects that, unchecked, will continue to destroy essential portions of the earth. And this is only one of many environmental organizations listed by Greengrants, an organization existing to help fund such work.
            • National Resources Defense Council -The NRDC is dedicated to protecting the world's natural resources and ensuring a safe and healthy environment. Here you'll find reports, unpublished research, Congressional testimony and other materials by the lawyers, scientists and analysts at NRDC.
            • Greater Good - a shopping site,oddly enough, but one that's for people who'd like to help make a difference in the world. We list it here because it's full of links to environmental-activist sites.
            • Rechargable Battery Recycling Corporation - can help you recycle your portable rechargeable batteries - Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead* (Pb).

            Gardening

            • The Gilpin County Cooperative Extension office is here to help you with issues about living in the mountains. Look through this site for mountain gardening, fire mitigation, forest health, wildlife issues, 4-H youth development and more.
            • Denver Botanic Gardens - A calendar of local events, a regional Plant Select section, and a link to PlantTalk.
            • CSU Cooperative Extensions Page, Gardening Online - provides reliable information on more than 200 specific horticultural topics.

            • Cyndi's List - A good place to begin, especially if you have never done any genealogical research on the internet
            • Family Tree Searcher - Enter your ancestor information just once to search family trees at multiple online genealogy databases.
            • Ancestry.com -more than 550 million names in over 2,000 databases. You can search for free, but you will have to pay for the information in the records they find. Still, you can subscribe for a month at less than ten dollars and possibly get a lot of useful ancestral data. They claim they're committed to add new databases every business day. Between January & June 2000, for example, they added: 1890 Census Substitute, Slave Narratives, Biography & Genealogy Master Index, Revolutionary War Muster Rolls from 1775-83, NY Births and Baptisms SE Region 1660-1916,Rhode Island Birth Records, Rhode Island Death Records, Rhode Island Marriage Records,World War II & Korean Conflict Veterans Internees, & Canadian Immigrant Records.
            • Colorado Birth, Death and Divorce Certification - Birth records from 1910 are kept here. Links provided for earlier records.
            • Genealogy of Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties - Genealogy related specifically to Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties in Colorado.

            • Map Collection at the U of Texas at Austin - includes world maps by region as well as a collection of historical maps.
            • Portals to the World - The Library of Congress has launched a new Web site that provides unique data for 49 countries. The project plans to a have a Web page for each country in the world by 2003. A good place to look if you're researching a particular country or part of the world.

            Health & Medicine

              • _Project Healthy - provides consumer health information programs of interest to older adults. HEALTHY programs are offered online in live, interactive mode, on CD, and on cassette for talking book readers.
              • Medical Reference for Non-Medical Librarians - which may be equally useful to non-medical library patrons.
              • Alzheimer's Association - informs about Alzheimer's Disease, including the preventative steps we can take.
              • Netwellness - a non-profit consumer health web site. Recently answered the 15,000th question submitted through its popular "Ask an Expert" service. Ask an Expert features over 200 health and medical faculty from the University of Cincinnati (UC), The Ohio State University (OSU), and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) who answer all legitimate questions, usually within two to three days. One of the first health sites on the Internet.
              • ACLIN's Health & Medicine - provides health information for Colorado residents with emphasis on state and local resources.
              • National Women's Health Network Does not accept, thus is not influenced by, financial support from pharmaceutical companies or medical device manufacturers.
              • Mayo Clinic Health Oasis News, indepth features, and "centers" on specific illnesses and treatments.
              • Intelihealth Johns Hopkins' health advice.
              • drkoop.com-Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop hosts this. Health news and resources, support groups, a drug checker.
              • Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Resources (Hardin MD) - a massive list of lists by medical specialty that leads to other lists before you can choose a resource.
              • Health A to Z - browsable and searchable database of health information, exclusively cataloged by medical professionals.
              • HealthWeb - a collaborative project designed to provide organized access to health-related Internet resources, sponsored by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and the Greater Midwest Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.
              • Medical World Search - The search engine recognizes medical terms in queries and automatically expands them into synonyms and more specific medical phrases, then searches for these terms in the contents of medically relevant Web pages.
              • MedicineNet - features an online medical glossary and information on diseases as well as a pharmacy section with information on generic and brand name drugs.
              • MedScape - a free service that features thousands of full-text, peer-reviewed articles, medical news, free Medline searching, and Medline full-text document delivery for a fee. MedScape requires registration, but no fee

            • The Motley Fool - In the courts of kings and queens, only the fool was allowed to speak the truth without getting his head cut off. Fool.com's stated mission is to "educate, amuse, and enrich". This is an online investing and personal finance site aimed at the novice investor and claiming to be "financial advise you can actually understand".
            • New York Times Business Page - breaking business and financial news "with a depth and texture well beyond what's available from news wires and other Web sites", or so they claim.
            • American Stock Exchange - includes volume, most active, largest percentage gains and declines & current information on the standing of individual stocks.
            • Currency Converter - convert 164 currencies to another currency using the rate of exchange 1990 to the present.
            • FinAid - the financial aid information page for students.
            • Financial Times- offers the highlights of today's newspaper. Requires registration but no fee.
            • The Foundation Center - for grantseekers and grantmakers.

            • A View from Niwot Ridge - Go to the LEFT of this page and click on "Control camera & View Images". You'll get a live view from the University of Colorado's Mountain Research Station camera atop Niwot Ridge. Better, you can move the camera and zoom in on particular views. If you want to see the local weather for yourself, what more could you ask?
            • Colorado Avalanche Information Center - an excellent source for current mountain weather information and a must for back country skiers.
            • CNN Weather - U.S. and world forecasts, weather maps, storm centers, and allergy reports.
            • Intellicasts - U. S. Weather forecasts and current readings, and other stuff.

              • Mark Udall - the member of the U. S. Congress who represents Colorado's Second District, encompassing Gilpin, Boulder, Jefferson and Clear Creek Counties.

              • Congressional Research Reports - CRS Reports, funded by the public and by law available, do not become public until a member of Congress releases the report. A number of libraries and non-profit organizations have sought to collect as many of the released reports as possible. Open CRS is a centralized utility that brings together these collections to search.
              • Firstgov.com- Intended to be the most convenient entry to all U. S. Government web sites.
              • NATO - Central site for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A great site to help students keep up to date on global issues.
              • United Nations - For a complete search of UN documents back to its founding look for the database UNIQUE (UN Info QUEst).
              • U.S. State Department Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets - Anyone planning on traveling outside the U.S. should always check out this information first. These documents include medical, government, crime (and more) information on each country.

              • Census Bureau
                A wonderful source for US statistical information. Through the search area, you can search on place name, via zip code or via maps. Also allows you tell it to display only the data you want; a significant advantage over the print version.
              • Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms - Just what is "friendly fire"? Get the official military definition of that term and many others here.
              • DefenseLINK - The Web site for the Department of Defense. Through here you can find information on all aspects of the US military from the Joint Chiefs through the Coast Guard.
              • Department of Agriculture - Central repository for agriculture information from the federal government.
              • Directorate of Time, U.S. Naval Observatory - Although not the best site for just checking the time, it is a wonderful way to make sure your watch is set correctly.
              • Federal Emergency Management Agency - A great site to be aware of in times of disaster. Information on how to prepare and up-to-date information on conditions and contact information during times of large-scale disasters.

              • Social Security On Line - Offers access to forms, general information and office locations. Check out the "top ten requested services" first. Chances are you'll find what your looking for there. (Most information is also available in Spanish.)
              • Statistical Abstract of the United States - All of the "StatAb" information is here back to 1996. Unfortunately it is not searchable and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. As useful as the print version, just not more useable.
              • STO's Internet Patent Search System - Offers patent number and patent title. Does not offer patent holder's name or any other text.
              • U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) - Information on biology, geology, mapping and water. Includes a section on information for your particular state.
              • The White House - Includes online tours, a searchable virtual library of documents, information released today, and a directory of commonly requested federal services.

              • Boulder County Government Web Sites- a listing with links to a variety of online connections to Boulder County Governmental agencies.

                  • The Annotated Constitution - Complete text of the U.S. Constitution with annotations linked to relates U.S. Supreme Court cases. Searchable but can not be browsed.
                  • Code of Federal Regulations - "The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government."
                  • Federal Election Commission - View the filings of national candidates including find raising activities and intent-to-run.
                  • FindLaw - Think of Yahoo! for legal resources. Divided into subject categories and searchable.
                  • Supreme Court Decisions - A section of the FindLaw site dealing with U.S. Supreme Court Decisions. This is the most comprehensive collection on the Internet. Search by citation, party name, or keyword. Results are linked to all published opinions and in some cases to audio from the arguments.
                  • United States Code - searchable full-text database of the U.S. Federal law.

                  • The Dismal Scientist - A central repository for economic data. Try searching on the zip code of a close metropolitan area to get specific statistics and rankings.
                  • FedWorld Information Network - "...a comprehensive central access point for searching, locating, ordering and acquiring government and business information.
                  • Monthly Catalog of Federal Publications (MOCAT) - the finding tool for federal publications that includes descriptive records for historical and current publications and provides direct links to those that are available online. Users can search by authoring agency, title, subject, and general key word, or click on "Advanced Search" for more options.
                  • THOMAS - Web site for the U.S. Congress. Bill texts and statuses are available back through the 93rd congress (depending on what you're looking for.) Also available are committee schedules, calendar and roll call votes.
                  • Uncle Sam Migrating Government Publications - The site every government documents librarian needs to be familiar with. A directory of government docs by title and SuDoc number that are available electronically.
                  • University of Michigan Documents Center - "The Documents Center is a central reference and referral point for government information, whether local, state, federal, foreign or international. Its web pages are a reference and instructional tool for government, political science, statistical data, and news."
                  • U.S. Government and Politics - General annotated directory of government resources put together by Larry Schankman. [ No longer updated and maintained but still may be useful.]
